5 Key Rules in Website Design 3

3) Have a simple and clear navigation, throughout the whole of the site

You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. They only make the reader feel interrupted and confused. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

Also think about it in terms of keywords. What are the main words that are going to bring a visitor to your site?

Or describe your product or service? What are your top products. Should you put them in alphabetical order, or should the bestsellers go above the fold? Or why not a bestseller page?

A specials page?

You know your products best. A lot of web designers will give you something tarty and flashy if you let them. Rein them in and make sure that your words do the selling for you.
