The Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire, which does research on angel investors and their investment profile, has tracked the behavior of angels for several years.

Their most current report is for Q 1 and Q2 of 2008.

According to this report:

The angel investor market in Q1,2 2008 has continued a reasonable growth path in investment dollars but has exhibited little change in investment deals from Q1,2 2007.

Total investments in Q1,2 2008 were $12.4 billion, an increase of 4.2% over Q1,2 2007, according to the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire.

A total of 23,100 entrepreneurial ventures received angel funding in Q1,2 2008, a slight decrease of 3.8% from Q1,2 2007, and the number of active investors in Q1,2 2008 was 143,000 individuals, an increase of 2.1% over Q1,2 2007.

The modest increase in total dollars and angel investors, coupled with the decrease in investments resulted in a larger deal size for Q1,2 2008 (8.0%).

These data indicate that angels are exhibiting a cautious approach to investing in light of the recent volatility in the economy and reducing their individual risk exposure by including more angels in each deal.
