Beating the Competition With Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Part 2

First of all, you need to visit your competitor’s sites. Look for all the sites you can come up with that may be selling anything similar to your main product, and then visit each one.

Look who is on the top page of the search results for your search engine of choice. Check Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Are the ten pages similar or different? Print them out, and make a spreadsheet showing the sames of each site under each search engine.

Then look at the ads that are running on that first page of search results. Click on them, and see what sites you are taken to. Are the sites the same as the ones you found on the Top 10 search results?

The top ten search results are called organic. The ads results are called Pay Per Click, or PPC. PPC is an important part of SEM, search engine marketing. SEO and SEM are very closely allied to one another, as we will explain in a moment.
